Carbon Farming Initiative

Legislation for the CFI passed on 23 of August and operational from December 2011. The CFI Act is available on the Comlaw website.

Project proponents can register to participate and also open an account in the national registry of emissions units. Where CFI methodologies are available, you can begin applying for approval of your projects.

Manure management, reforestation, feral animals (camels), savanna burning and landfill gas methodologies have been developed and are being assessed by the interim Domestic Offsets Integrity Committee. Other methodologies are being developed by Government, with stakeholders e.g. reduced fertiliser use, livestock emission, increasing soil carbon, restoring rangelands, revegetation and avoided deforestation.
