What HRLN is looking for in productive partnerships

HRLN partnerships involve collaborative working arrangements and aim at involving stakeholders (particularly community groups) in all phases of joint projects. Partnerships are a means to an end and are sought to deepen the partners’ and the public understanding and awareness of significant environmental issues. HRLN is already a key-partner of a number of regional organisations including the Hunter-Central Rivers CMA and the Hunter Water Corporation.

The NRM challenge

“Right now this land needs our love more than ever. It needs intensive care, it’s up to all of us.” [Jack Thomson actor and Landcare Ambassador]

Landcare ‘raison d’etre’ is to care for the land.

Australia and this region have many serious environmental problems.

  • Salt in our soil
  • Biodiversity is being lost
  • Water quality is diminishing
  • Remaining vegetation needs protection
  • Soil erosion
  • Drought

NRM issues affect 86% of agricultural establishments (source ABS 2004-05), Australian farmers face the challenge of developing sustainable farming systems. Landcare farming provides real and durable solutions as it focuses on the long-term productive capacity of the land. ABARE reported that the majority of farmers adopting sustainable farming practices were members of Landcare (or professional associations).
